Blackstone Products has recalled select lots of its Parmesan Ranch seasoning due to a potential contamination risk linked to salmonella. The affected products were sold "nationwide exclusively through Walmart stores" and the company's website. No illnesses have been reported so far. Salmonella is one of the leading causes of foodborne illness in the United States.
Back-to-back storms in March brought Hawaii's worst flooding in 20 years. More than 600 of Hawaii's 6,500 farms reported nearly $40 million in damage, including to crops, livestock and machinery. The farm bureau estimates the full extent of the destruction is $50 million at close to 2,000 farms. Many of the farmers are immigrants from Asia and Portugal.
Students at Medomack Valley High School in Waldoboro, Maine were served potting soil at the Empty Bowl Supper, a community service event raising money to fight hunger. They had baked a batch of oven-roasted dirt earlier that day during a science class experiment to determine the effect of sterilized soil on plant growth. It got mixed with other food items meant for the meal and was brought out for service at the dinner. Three students ate some of it, thinking it was a dessert.
Air quality alerts have been issued across parts of southern California and southeastern Colorado due to wildfire smoke and windblown dust. People affected by the alerts are advised to keep windows and doors closed and to limit outdoor activity. A new study from McMaster University shows that long-term exposure to air pollution is directly linked to poorer cognitive function and visible brain damage. The study was conducted as part of the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds study. Researchers studied nearly 7,000 middle-aged adults across five Canadian provinces to see if exposure to common air pollutants was linked to cognitive decline. People living in areas with higher air pollution scored worse on memory, understanding and mental speed.
The 2026 bee swarm season in North America has started 17 days earlier than last year. This year’s early season follows several years of record colony declines worldwide. It follows the largest honeybee die-off in recorded US history, when beekeepers reported losing more than 60% of their colonies. The climate crisis may be playing a role in shifting bees’ reproductive cycles.

Medify Air is asking a judge to throw out the $26.8 million contract San Diego County awarded to Oransi LLC for tens of thousands of portable air purifiers. The company claims the county used vague language in its request for bids and relied on unverified claims to select the lowest bidder. Medify Air claims the selected purifiers will not meet guidelines for noise and air pollution requirements.
