Chad Bown talked about trade relations with China at a Peterson Institute event launching the "How To Win a Trade War" book. Bown believes that China has a different economic system and a different way of interacting with the international trading system than the rest of the world. China's policies and outcomes made it clear that it didn't believe in interdependence the same way as other members of the WTO and other economies. U.S. foreign policy was distracted by the 9/11 response for many years. Pressuring China on anything was not high on the agenda, and getting China's support (or non-objection) for War on Terror things was more of the focus
US-China trade deals are contingent on stability at the middle, strategic layer. The dynamics may be epitomised by two companies: Nvidia and ASML. Last year, the US goods trade deficit hit a record of US$1.24 trillion, while China reported a record trade surplus of $1.2 trillion. The US has shifted import sources while China diversified its export markets. Most of Nvidia’s chips are made by TSMC using ASML machines.

Vladimir Putin visited Beijing on Tuesday for a photo exhibition on China and Russia’s “everlasting friendship” and released a joint statement in which they pledged to “deepen cooperation” on everything from nuclear energy to the preservation of leopards, pandas and monkeys. A high-level American defence industry delegation arrived in Taipei on Tuesday for a four-day visit aimed at expanding the US role in the island's military modernisation process and the joint production of weapons systems.
