The economy gained 172,000 jobs in May, extending a three-month winning streak. Donald Trump's first term saw the worst job market since the Great Recession. In the first four months of Trump's second term, job growth slowly improved. In February, the Supreme Court struck down Trump's tariffs agenda and the economy added 565,000 new jobs.

President Trump's tariffs on imported "tinplate steel" for metal cans of fruits and veggies are raising prices for consumers. Del Monte Foods announced it would be closing a fruit cannery in Modesto, California in January 2026. In the post-free trade era, economic nationalism is in vogue. Trade policy is designed to make sure the United States becomes more self-sufficient and to protect leading industries from too much foreign competition. It would be based on whether other countries maintain and enforce similar measures. It is similar in scope to the Trump Administration’s illegal 10.8% International Emergency Economic Act (IEEI) and its illegal 10% Section 122%.

The U.S. Supreme Court invalidated much of Trump’s ā€˜Liberation Day’ tariffs. The administration proposes to impose a direct 10% duty on economies that have a complete or partial prohibition on forced labor imports. The proposal also includes a separate textile mechanism. The written comments must be submitted by July 6 with public hearings to be held on July 7. Dow Jones has more exposure to this type of news than many investors realize.

The Trump administration is trying to destroy the liberal consensus. The president’s tariffs destroyed the foreign markets for U.S. agricultural products, while his war on Iran has sent the price of diesel fuel farmers need skyrocketing and put the cost of fertilizer out of reach. The New World Screwworm has been found in Texas for the first time since 1966. The administration cut funding for disease control and prevention.
