Three recently closed California prisons are at risk of reopening as immigration detention centers under intensified federal immigration raids and arrests. The state has already spent $300 million keeping shuttered prisons operational as immigration raids escalate. CURB urges Governor Newsom and the Legislature to take immediate action to close the prisons.
California plans to spend $239 million to transform San Quentin prison into a rehabilitation center inspired by Nordic countries. Danish architecture firm was hired to create the facility. The new design includes a farmers market, classrooms, a podcast production studio and a cafe. San Quentin's security level is being reduced from maximum to medium.

Ms Arnold's prison has 88 female inmates. 48% of them are on remand and awaiting trial, double the average of 22%. Scottish Government's report on the prison population points to a stable female prison population but an upwards trend relating to women on remands. New York to release some prison inmates early over shortage of guard staff
New York state prisons will release some inmates early because the system does not have enough corrections officers. The state fired more than 2,000 guards who went on strike over poor working conditions. Governor signed an executive order that prevents state agencies from hiring guards who were fired for striking.

Tracey Millington-Jones' mother Wendy Speakes was raped and murdered in Wakefield in March 1994. Christopher Farrow was jailed for life for her murder. Parole Board recommended that he should be transferred to an open prison. Ms Millsonton-Jones has written to the Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood asking her to reject the proposal.
