Overdose death rates decline in Alaska after record high

There were 18 fewer Alaskans died of overdose in 2024 than the year before. Alaska has expanded access to medication-assisted treatment, recovery housing, and therapeutic courts. The state distributed 45,000 naloxone kits with fentanyl test strips. Alaska struggles with having enough resources to provide treatment for substance use disorders.
