The conflict in Kamdesh and Bargi-Matal districts left people without access to food and essential services. The ICRC, ARCS and WFP coordinated a joint humanitarian response on 21 April. The response included the delivery of food, medical supplies and other relief items.

In Coal Country, Black Lung Surges as Federal Protections Stall

Justin Smarsh, 42, has progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, or black lung disease. He used to work in a coal mine in Cherry Tree, Pennsylvania. There is no cure for the disease. Between 2013 and 2017, hundreds of cases of severe cases were identified at three Virginia clinics. The disease is on the uptick at a time when the Trump administration is calling for the expansion of coal production.

In Minneapolis, evictions are outpacing solutions

Eviction filings across the Twin Cities metro jumped nearly 19% in March 2026 compared to one year earlier. In Minneapolis alone, they spiked by more than 60% to 452 filings, according to quarterly data released by HOME Line, a tenant advocacy nonprofit. The most meaningful solution to evictions would be a state-level infusion of rental assistance, but with a split statehouse, that's almost certainly not coming. The Minneapolis City Council voted 8-5 to extend the pre-eviction notice period to 45 days, up from 30 days, and it will go into effect on May 1.

DOJ charges Mexican officials, including governor of Sinaloa, with drug trafficking

The Department of Justice has charged the governor of Sinaloa and nine other current and former Mexican officials with drug trafficking. Ruben Rocha Moya is the highest official named in Wednesday’s indictment. The defendants are accused of helping to import massive amounts of narcotics into the United States in exchange for bribes and political influence.

5-year-old was brutally and repeatedly beaten before he was left dead in a dumpster, autopsy shows

Elyjah Hearn, 5, was found dead in a dumpster in Panorama City last July. His cause of death was ruled blunt force trauma and the manner a homicide. Brycson Gaddis, his mother's ex-boyfriend, is accused of beating him to death. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $2 million bail.

The Military Rethinks Influenza

Secretary Hegseth removed the influenza vaccine from the mandatory immunizations list for the armed forces. The most recent outbreak of influenza in 2014 involved the USS Ardent, a small crew of 126 sharing a common common infection. General Washington first mandated inoculation against smallpox for the troops.
