The outbreak of Salmonella Newport linked to cantaloupe has ended. 70 people were infected with the same strain from 25 states. FDA placed Ayco Farms Inc. of Pompano Beach, Florida, on import alert 99-35. The cantaloupes from Ayco San Jorge Y Compania Limitada and Agrobassy Y Cia Ltda will be detained without physical examination until they overcome the violations.
California gave plastic producers until 2032 to make all their packaging recyclable or compostable. It's the most ambitious deadline in the country. Advocates say it doesn't go far enough. Producers say it goes too far. Two environmental groups say they plan to take California to court. The law applies to almost all single-use packaging.
Severe drought hit the wild blueberry fields at Crystal Spring Farm in Maine last year. The farm's 2025 harvest was almost a total loss. The industry harvested nearly 88 million pounds of fruit in 2023, bringing $361 million in revenue to the state. Wild blueberries are an iconic food in Maine.
