Jiangnan Shipyard has unveiled a concept for a nuclear-powered floating logistics hub that would serve as a container transhipment terminal, energy production centre and charging station for future vessels. The project is designed to support the long-term decarbonisation of global shipping and is based on molten salt reactor technology.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Sunly have formalised contracts for the construction of four large-scale battery storage facilities in Latvia. The first of the battery systems is due to be operational in the first quarter of 2027, with the remaining three projects due to follow later the same year. The agreement was announced at the opening of Sunly’s new solar park in Valmiera.

The SHANTI Act has opened the sector to private players. There is a growing demand for nuclear energy. The session titled "Nuclear to Green Hydrogen: The Alternatives" will evaluate this shift. It will be held at the event Business Today India’s Most Sustainable Companies 2026.

GM is investing $900 million in energy-storage technology. It is developing a new sodium-ion battery chemistry for grid-scale deployments. GM will sell the cells to Peak Energy. GM is also expanding its work with Redwood Materials, the battery-recycling startup founded by former Tesla executive J.B. Straubel. Redwood already operates a data center in Nevada.

In 2025, conflicts or tensions had the greatest impact on the global energy system. In 2030, energy market volatility will be the most important cause of market volatility. In 2026, the energy sector will see the greatest growth in investment. In 2050, pursuing net-zero emissions by 2050 will have an impact on global economic growth, energy security, and energy access.

Xi Jinping will visit North Korea on Monday and Tuesday next week. It will be his first state visit to the hermit nation since 2019. He will meet Kim Jong-un, US President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin within about a month. China tightened regulations on overseas technology transfers under new rules about cross-border investments. US proposed tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners, including China and the EU. China warned the EU against new trade restrictions.

At an event in San Francisco today, General Motors made a series of announcements around EV batteries, energy storage, and grid resiliency in the face of growing electricity demand from AI data centers. The automaker is activating new vehicle-to-grid capabilities for its current EV and home energy customers and releasing a new commercial energy storage system strategy anchored by newly developed sodium-ion batteries for industrial-scale grid applications.

Every automaker wants a slice of the energy storage market. Sales of large, stationary batteries have doubled in the past two years. GM has dabbled in energy storage before, but on Tuesday it launched a new sodium-ion battery chemistry aimed at the heart of the market. Data center energy demand is expected to nearly triple by the end of the decade.

China is expected to overtake the United States as the world's nuclear power leader within five years. The AI boom and war in the Middle East renew a global push for reliable energy sources. Beijing has identified nuclear power as a crucial energy source in its latest five-year plan, targeting 110 GW of installed capacity by 2030.

Hydrogen of Dutch Origin (H2DO) has kicked off a study for a 30-50MW offshore green hydrogen concept in the Dutch part of the North Sea. The study will demonstrate how offshore hydrogen production can unlock more offshore wind while reinforcing Europe's strategic energy autonomy. The goal is to have the project operational in 2031.
