Illinois bill and court ruling could help more people move on after wrongful convictions

Illinois lawmakers and courts have moved to make certificates of innocence more valuable and easier to get for some wrongfully convicted people. The legislation passed June 1 would increase the payout to up to $50,000 per year in prison and $25,000 a year on probation or parole with no cap on total compensation. Illinois has lagged behind other states, paying out about $15,500 per year of incarceration.

Williamson County Breaks Ground on New Adult Detention Center

Williamson County, Tenn., and BELL Construction broke ground on a new 230,000-square-foot adult detention center on June 10. The facility will include 596 beds, 18 housing pods, 260 prefabricated metal cells and a parking garage with 156 secure parking stalls. The project is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2029. In March, the county broke ground for a new juvenile justice center in Franklin.

Lawmaker Pushes for Ban on Special Treatment for Convicted Drug Traffickers After ProPublica Report

Rep. Norma Torres introduced the measure as an amendment to a House appropriations bill. It's in response to ProPublica reporting on the special treatment given to former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump in December. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison for taking bribes and allowing drug traffickers to export more than 400 tons of cocaine to the U.S. while he was in office.

External audit finds PA no longer rewarding security prisoners — diplomats

Preliminary results from an external audit of the Palestinian Authority's welfare program show it is being properly implemented. The audit found that recipients are no longer being awarded based on whether a relative of theirs carried out an attack against Israel, according to diplomats briefed on the audit. It also found that payments are made strictly based on recipients meeting financial criteria based on their financial situation.

Families can celebrate Juneteenth at Eastern State Penitentiary with a day of live music, storytelling and activities for kids. The festival takes place Friday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and includes performances, family programming and discussions about the history and significance of Juneteenth.

Horror detention: Pregnant women sit in handcuffs in ICE camps

There are reports of abuses in US deportation detention centers. Four detainees from the largest detention center in Texas filed a federal lawsuit alleging human rights violations. According to KFF Health News, hundreds of detainees in more than 33 states report inadequate medical care. The Department of Homeland Security denies the allegations.

Newark, New Jersey is the newest battleground for the Trump administration. There's a war being fought at the Delaney Hall detention facility, overseen by ICE and run by private prison contractor, GEO Group. Governor Mikie Sherrill has passed laws that forbid local police cooperation with ICE’s anti-migrant efforts. She also sent in New Jersey State Police troopers to quell disturbances outside the facility. Several photojournalists have been injured while documenting the clashes near the detention center.

The Guantanamo Bay military base is located on the southeastern coast of Cuba. The territory has been under US control since 1903 due to a controversial lease agreement. Cuba considers the treaty invalid. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States established a controversial prison camp at Guantánamo. Almost 800 people were imprisoned there.
