The Hindu Kush Himalaya region, which stretches across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan, is the epicenter of the climate emergency confronting Central and South Asia. The glaciers across the 3,500-kilometer arc are retreating 65 percent faster than in the previous decade. The region has already recorded a 23-year low in snow persistence for the third consecutive year. Central Asia has already warmed by 1.2 degrees C, which has led to a 20 percent decline in snow depth.

Water supply to villages in southern Iran has been restored after US strikes hit reservoirs, state television reported on Thursday. Festus Ng’eno, principle secretary for Kenya’s Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, announced the achievement at a recent U.N. climate meeting in Bonn, Germany.

Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is pushing for federal laws to protect against encroachment on natural resources. The state of drought in Utah is exacerbated by low snowfalls and rising temperatures.

NOAA's latest outlook confirms that El Niño has begun as warm water sloshes eastward to the normally chilly ocean off Peru’s coast. It estimated a 63% chance the El Niño will grow into a very strong event later this year. Forecasters gained confidence after clearing a hurdle known as the “spring predictability barrier”

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that the state is sending $46 million in voter-approved funding to help clean up the contaminated Tijuana River at the California-Mexico border. Since 2018, more than 100 billion gallons of raw sewage filled with industrial chemicals and trash have poured into the river. The sewage has filled the region with a distinctive “rotten-egg” smell that sicken people.
