Microsoft, Amazon and Google's carbon emissions have increased by nearly a fifth in the past year. They emitted 119m mTCO₂e (metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) in the financial year ending March 2026, or about a third of those of France. The previous year, they emitted roughly 101m mT CO2 equivalent. The companies' climate ambitions have been hit in recent years by a boom in demand for cloud services related to training and operating chatbots and other AI products. The world's biggest tech companies are on track to spend $765bn this year on building AI datacentres.

Judge strikes defamation lawsuit against San Diego journalist over data center reporting

A San Diego Superior Court judge ruled in favor of a broadcast journalist on Friday on defamation claims. Sebastian Rucci sued KPBS and reporter Kori Suzuki over his coverage of a proposed Imperial Valley data center. Rucci alleged the reporter's reporting cast him and the proposed data center in a negative light. The data center would be the largest in California.

‘We've been sacrificed': Homeowner may lose 1/3 of her property to high-voltage power line for data center

Vicky Hu lives in Ashburn, Virginia. Dominion Energy wants to build a high-voltage transmission line through her and her neighbors' backyards and school yards. Loudoun County's school board called an emergency meeting on Monday night to discuss the issue. The school board would have to approve the construction of the transmission line.
