Exposure to everyday chemicals can add up – a toxicologist offers simple steps to reduce your dose

Toxicologist studies how chemical exposures affect human health. People are rarely exposed to one chemical at a time, but many low-level exposures can have a combined effect on the human body. New methods for testing chemical mixtures are being developed to predict the possible combinations of chemicals.

At This Utah Farm, Resilience Starts With Food – Food Tank

David Chen emigrated to the United States from China in 1982. His family came to Utah with little money, support, or English language skills. He grew poinsettias and other plants in landscaping and nursery businesses. The heavy use of agricultural chemicals made him sick, so he stopped using them and started farming vegetables in greenhouses. He named his farm Zoe's Garden after his first daughter. Today, the farm supplies grown fruits, vegetables and herbs to CSA members, farmers’ markets, and local restaurants.

US chemical accidents rising as Trump rolls back protections, report finds

The number of chemical accidents in the US has increased by at least 51% since 2021. Deaths and injuries were up at least 20%. The report comes on the heels of two high-profile emergencies, including a malfunctioning chemical tank in Garden Grove, California, which caused the evacuation of more than 40,000 residents and a chemical tank collapse in Longview, Washington, which killed 11 workers. The Clean Air Act requires more than 12,500 high-risk facilities to develop protocols to prevent catastrophes and limit fallout. The Biden administration strengthened the protections in 2024, but the Trump administration is pressing on with its controversial plans to dismantle the federal disaster management system.

The Food Safety Outreach Program’s 10th Birthday: A Review

The Food Safety Outreach Program (FSOP) was established by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Congress created it to fund outreach, education, training, and technical assistance projects that directly assist small and mid-sized farms, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers, small processors, and small-scale wholesalers. It's been 15 years since FSMA passed and 10 years into the FSOP grants. Funding for the program has remained stagnant and decreased when accounting for inflation. LGUs received the majority of grants from the program, but there has been a worrying trend in recent years of an increase in only one type of recipient, LGUs, and shrinking award amounts for all

California lawmakers seek ‘forever chemicals’ protections — despite EPA rollbacks

There are nearly 15,000 different PFAS chemicals used in everyday items and in fire-fighting foams, pesticides and many industrial processes. Exposure to some of the most studied forever chemicals has been linked to cancer, liver disease, immune system disruption and other chronic health problems. According to the Environmental Working Group, 165 million Americans drink PFAS-laced tap water.

Commentary: Industrial accidents in poor neighborhoods are so L.A. And it's nothing new
